    Web Site 2.0

August 22, 2003
Welcome to the brand new Woodland Hills Church web site! We hope the new layout makes navigation easier and helps you reach more information. With fewer clicks of the mouse you can get details on upcoming events and classes, church service times and maps.

The decision in 2002 to update the website was simple. However, change is never easy, even for those who want to, and carrying out the project proved to be more difficult.

In November, the call went out to writers who wanted to work on the church’s new website. They gathered, learned about what was required and snatched up their assignments.

"The decision to update the web site was simple."
Each person took a piece to work on and wrote up all the information on areas such as children’s church and marriage ministries. Some are going the extra mile to write articles. Every few weeks, the site will be updated with new articles, keeping the content fresh.

The most important task of actually building the site was already set in motion months earlier by the development team.

The biggest struggle with the creation of the new web site was the programming. “We found a good open source Content Management System to start with,” said Communications Director Charley Swanson, indicating the easy to use program used to build the new site, “but it proved to be a challenge to modify.” Ultimately, Mike Selner, a member of the programming team and his brother Greg, donated a new system they were working on to ease the frustration. “It’s an extremely generous gift,” said Charley.

The designers, members of the church who committed their off time and knowledge, created the look and feel of the site. Three to four volunteers worked on the initial half-dozen concepts for a new site. Two of the final designs were brought to the pastors and a decision was made. Josh Kopinski did the final design, and the others helped to get the site to what it is now.

The retired original website was created by Dave Hemminger and has proved to be a great tool for over two years.

The ultimate plan of the new Woodland Hills website is to provide a place where visitors and current attendees can go to find interesting and relevant articles as well as information about the church itself. “It’s exciting to work on a project like this,” said Charley. “I really think our website has fantastic potential to be used as a communication tool.”

Feel free to explore the site – you can get your bearings by reviewing our site map, or use the search tool found on every page. If you have any comments or suggestions for further improvement please contact us, otherwise we hope you enjoy visiting us!

Many thanks to all our volunteers who helped make this site a reality!
