One of my favorite stories is about a prince and "goose girl" who fell in love. The goose girl grew up in the palace as a princess, but she always felt out of place there. The royal parties and palace etiquette made her uncomfortable. Instead, her favorite place was down at the pond with the geese. When she was old enough, she left the palace life to live in the woods with the animals. It was here that for the first time she felt true happiness and peace. The prince spotted her in the woods and instantly fell in love with her. They were later married in and lived at the palace. However, as time went by, the prince's deep love for his wife and his wisdom brought him to the conclusion that he needed to let go of her so that she could return to the woods. It is a sad story but it speaks of a love that goes beyond oneself. "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son." Love for another is not about what one gets in return. Many times I have to ask myself, "Am I giving myself to God so that I can be delivered from sin and be holy?" If the motive is about what I can get, it is not true love. True love is about self-abandonment.
Lord, I love thee Above all things It's not about What this love brings.
I abandon all Just to be with You I bury my needs And all that I do.
It's not about The fruit my life brings It's all about The love my soul sings.
Lord, let my life Be a pure sacrifice No blemish or stain In the presence of Christ.
