We all share in a similar calling from God – the call of transformation. It is so much easier to stay as we are, to be comfortable in our natural settings, with our normal friends and normal activities. But that is not God's calling. We are not to stay in the same rut. Unfortunately, it takes energy to get out of the rut. The call of transformation is simply a call to live by love, which openly welcomes change. I spend so much energy trying to change people and my environment to something that is easier for me to accommodate – to something I am familiar with. When I do this, I am fighting the "death of self." It is not easy to welcome life's sorrows or the broken relationships of loved ones. Who wants to welcome depression or shame? But each of these has the ability to transform us IF we allow it to. If we fight back, we lose an opportunity to allow the event to transform us with the power of God.
The door to my life I did lock, When an unexpected Guest did knock.
It was hard to welcome When sorrow came in. He took my door To let the rain in. I sat and wept While sorrow did stay. But the tears did soften My heart that day.
When sorrow left My house, he dressed With comfortable furniture For other guests. As I watched Compassion crept in And right behind Joy leaped in. Now my house Was beautiful for all It was even ready For darkness to fall. In the night Shame stopped my snooze. But he only took What I needed to lose. In the morning My house looked the best. Gratefulness Was now my guest. Now I'm ready For whoever shows up I greet with a smile Whomever may interrupt.
