I used to drive myself crazy trying to figure out God’s will for me and my purpose. And I think almost everyone who walks with Christ can say the same thing. It’s maddening when you are so in love with your Savior and you want to serve him with all your heart and soul, but there are so many things in the way. For me it’s that I want it to be so perfect, honorable and acceptable in his eyes, but I can’t seem to figure out what that would look like.
So what I’ve learned is that I can do God’s work anywhere, anytime, with anyone. He is everywhere. There isn’t one big thing maybe that he has planned for me. There is no maze to follow or figure out. I don’t have to commit weekly to an organization to be following or loving the Lord. I can do it every day in everything! If you’re like me and want to be a servant, here are a few ideas for how you can serve every day!!!
- Buy cookies or muffins and hand them out to construction workers. Even on White Bear Avenue near church, there has been lots of construction, and if you ask me, the workers are under appreciated. I can’t imagine they wouldn’t be pleasantly surprised and happy to receive a cookie in the middle of the day from a random driver!
- Hand out blankets to the homeless. You don’t have to go buy all new ones - I’m just talking about extra ones you have around the house. Or, ask friends and family if they have any to spare. All you have to do is wash them up and hand them out!
- Gather a few items and put them in gift bags for the homeless or those in a nursing home. My daughter and I went to the dollar store where we purchased 20 bags and 3 items for each bag each.
- Play cards with the folks at a nursing home. I know from experience that they welcome people any day and at almost any time, with no appointment necessary. You just need to tell them you came to visit and play games, and they will be more than happy to have you!
- Write a hurting friend or family member a letter, and tell them how your relationship with Jesus Christ is what gives you peace and joy. It might sound like a difficult thing to do, and it is. However, the great commission is to tell the good news, and it is usually appreciate because it’s coming from your heart.
- Invite a stranger or even a distant neighbor for dinner, or talk with people you have never met before when on a walk in your neighborhood. God is ready to use you wherever you are.
Then of course there are the everyday things that really matter: Hold a open, smile at everyone, ask a mother struggling with her children if she needs help. Let a car go in front of you. Run an errand for someone. Surprise someone with a visit, flowers, or a card in the mail. Offer to help clean up at a party. Do anything you imagined Christ would be doing.
Christ is in all of these things. Big or small, they are all the same to him. He doesn’t look at what we do, or how much we do. He looks at WHY we are doing it. That’s what’s important, why we are doing them. He knows. God bless you all, and have fun on your exciting journey. If you pray for the opportunities, trust me, he’ll give them to you.
